Capturing Thanksgiving Memories at Anastasia State Park: A Family Beach Photoshoot

As a wedding and family photographer based in Gainesville, Florida, I love any chance to create lasting memories for the people I care about. This Thanksgiving, I had the privilege of photographing my in-laws during our annual Thanksgiving camping trip. This year, we stayed at the stunning Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine. It’s the perfect mix of gorgeous beaches and historic charm. Photographing Mitch, Jacqui, and their three kids—Jackson (8), Micah (6), and Lela (2)—was such a fun and heartwarming experience. It reminded me why I love capturing family moments.

The Location: Anastasia State Park

Anastasia State Park is a true treasure on Florida’s Atlantic Coast. Its sandy beaches, dunes, and maritime hammocks make it a dream location for photos. Even though the weather was chilly and windy, the backdrop was absolutely worth it. The overcast skies gave us soft, even light—ideal for capturing warm and playful family moments.

Embracing the Elements

Florida weather loves to keep us on our toes, and Thanksgiving Day was no different. The cool breeze coming off the ocean made things a bit challenging, especially for little Lela, who wasn’t a fan of the wind. But the family’s adventurous nature really shined through. Mitch’s beard (which needed a little Photoshop help later), Jacqui’s bright smile, and the kids’ nonstop laughter made every shot a joy to capture.

The boys, Jackson and Micah, were full of energy, running up and down the dunes and letting the wind whip through their hair. Lela was just as fun and feisty and loved playing in the sand any chance she got. It’s these real, unpolished moments that make family photography so special. The wind and cold may have been tricky, but they added a playful, natural vibe to the shoot.

Capturing the Family Dynamics

Mitch and Jacqui’s connection with their kids was incredible to see and photograph. We started with some traditional posed shots—everyone looking at the camera—to get those classic family portraits. Then we moved into candid moments: the boys holding hands with Lela and walking along the shore, Mitch giving piggyback rides, and Jacqui sharing a quiet laugh chasing Lela down the beach.

One of my favorite photos from the day shows the whole family standing near the water, as the wind tosses their hair. It’s not a "perfect" shot, but that’s what makes it so perfect. It’s real life—joyful, messy, and beautiful all at once.

The Power of Post-Processing

Of course, no photoshoot is complete without some editing magic. Mitch’s beard, while impressive in person, had a bit of a wild side thanks to the wind. Photoshop came to the rescue, taming those stray hairs while keeping his rugged look intact. I also enhanced the muted tones of the cloudy day, bringing out the soft blues of the ocean and the warm tones in their outfits. Post-processing is where the photos truly come to life.

Creating Lasting Memories

After the photoshoot, we kept the Thanksgiving fun going by visiting St. Augustine’s "Nights of Lights" display. Walking through the sparkling streets with the family was the perfect way to end the day. As we took in the twinkling lights, I couldn’t help but think about how special these photos would be for them. Pictures like these are more than just images; they’re memories that freeze a moment in time, preserving it for years to come.

Why Family Photography Matters

Family photos aren’t just pretty pictures—they’re a way to celebrate love, growth, and connection. Whether it’s kids running wild on the beach or parents sharing a quiet hug, these sessions are all about capturing what makes each family unique. As someone who photographs families and weddings in Jacksonville, Gainesville, and beyond, I feel so lucky to be part of creating these meaningful keepsakes.

Tips for a Successful Beach Photoshoot

Planning your own beach family session? Here are a few tips to make it a breeze (pun intended):

  1. Dress Comfortably and Coordinately: Pick outfits that go well together without being too matchy-matchy. Layers can help if it’s chilly, and soft, neutral tones are always a great choice for the beach.

  2. Prepare for the Weather: Bring jackets or blankets just in case. You’ll be glad you did!

  3. Focus on Candid Moments: Some of the best shots happen when you’re just being yourselves—laughing, playing, and having fun.

  4. Choose the Right Time: Early morning or late afternoon light is magical at the beach. It’s soft and golden and makes everything look dreamy.

  5. Relax and Have Fun: The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will turn out. Trust your photographer to guide you and capture the magic.
